Rapid Ideation
An extensive sketch study was completed to capture a multitude of ideas spanning across many styles and eras.
Early Concept Narrow
Quick thumbnail sketches were helpful in finding silhouettes and general material breaks.
Base Concept Design
The early idea of a chair mixed with a lounge received the most interesting feedback. This abstract idea turned out to yield many possible directions.
Full Scale MOdels
Visual and working prototype models allowed for validating CAD model proportions.
What’s Inside?
Plywood Whale Bone Structure
Working closely with the a vender, the underlying form was designed for a rigid backbone for the next steps, upholstery. The goal was to generate the most strength while reducing the overall weight, as much as possible. The underneath platform is cost-efficiently design to have a 4” walnut edge band, as opposed to a full Walnut construction.
UPHOLSTERY and PLatform COnstruction
Utilizing the plywood structure, the 3-piece upholstery system is comprised of a backrest, an arm rest and a removable, seat cushion. Separating the upholstery allowed for cleaner lines and ease-of-assembly. The two rests are fixed to the walnut-banded platform and everything then rests on a six legged, powder coated, a steel frame.
Prototyping
A valuable learning process of firsts. Working alongside a vender to cut and weld the steel frame and personally cutting, glueing and finishing the walnut x plywood platform.
